Harnessing IoT to build trust and enhance visibility in diverse industries

Article
Over the past few years, Melita has increasingly focused on the Internet of Things (IoT) through a specialised division, melita.io. This shift has enabled us to address specific industry pain points through tailored IoT networks and devices, fostering trust-based relationships between our solutions partners and their customers.

IoT in Logistics: Enhancing Transparency and Security

One notable application of our IoT solutions is in the logistics sector. By integrating IoT technology, we enable real-time tracking of vehicles and goods, significantly increasing transparency within the supply chain. This visibility helps mitigate risks such as loss, theft, or damage.

For instance, an international client uses our IoT solutions to monitor beer kegs, tracking not only their location to prevent delays and theft but also the temperature and volume inside the kegs for optimal quality control and stock management. Similarly, a local fuel supplier has leveraged our IoT connectivity to enhance visibility, benefiting both the supplier and their customers by ensuring efficient and secure delivery.

IoT in Electric Vehicle Charging: Ensuring Reliability and Accessibility

A use of IoT which is particularly important in Malta is in managing electric vehicle (EV) charging points. Melita IoT systems facilitate real-time monitoring of power availability and station occupancy. This information feeds into an App used by drivers to choose the most convenient – and available – charging station.

The reliability of our network is essential in building trust with consumers; this is one of the most important aspects of my role.

In Malta, where we own the network infrastructure, addressing coverage and performance issues is straightforward. However, internationally, the challenges are greater due to dependencies on multiple infrastructure partners – usually a minimum of two roaming partners in any country – this needs more complex troubleshooting and optimisation efforts.

Securing IoT Deployments to Build Consumer Trust

Security is a critical concern in the deployment of IoT devices, which are often designed to be cost-effective with minimal built-in intelligence.  We prioritise the security of these devices through several strategies. Our approach includes fundamental security measures such as firewalls and VPN encryption, along with more sophisticated solutions like private networks for each customer and advanced attack protection mechanisms, including anti-DDoS measures.

The recent integration of the Google Chronicle Security Operations solution, which combines SIEM and SOAR capabilities enhanced by generative AI, further strengthens our ability to monitor and respond to security incidents.  Recently, our acquisition of the German IoT company, Crout has expanded our expertise in IoT hardware, an example of how we are continually improving our offering.

Adapting to an Evolving Digital World

In the fast-evolving realm of digital technologies, maintaining trust requires vigilance and adaptability. There is no one-size-fits-all solution.  Instead, businesses must use all available tools, continually assess their environment and embrace reliable partnerships, possibly even considering outsourcing where necessary to enhance security and efficiency.

Melita remains committed to leveraging IoT technology not only to improve business operations but also to foster a secure, transparent, and reliable environment for all our clients – and their customers.
